Are You Experiencing These Symptoms?

It is estimated that one-third of the population will experience neck pain in any given year. It can worsen if left untreated, and in severe cases, surgery may even be required.

However, there is some good news: many people find relief from neck pain with the help of physiotherapy every year!

Neck pain typically runs from the base of a person’s skull to the top of their shoulder blades and settles in the back of the neck.

The pain can vary in severity, from a constant dull ache to sharp and stabbing pains. Neck pain can sometimes include these additional symptoms:

  • Headaches
  • Numbness or tingling into the upper extremities
  • Inability to fully stand up or sit up straight
  • Discomfort and pain when remaining in the same position for too long
  • Difficulty sleeping due to pain and discomfort
  • Weakness in your arms or shoulders
  • Stiffness and muscle tightness in the upper body

Common Causes Of Chronic Neck Pain

Injuries to tissues and bone are the most common reason for neck pain, however, certain degenerative conditions can also lead to neck pain.

Some common conditions that can give you pain in your neck include:

Illnesses

Certain diseases and ailments can result in neck pain, such as rheumatoid cancer, arthritis, cervical spondylosis, spinal stenosis, and meningitis.

Injuries

Whiplash is one of the most common injuries that result in neck pain, typically sustained by an automobile or high-impact sports collision. This is known as a “strain” injury, causing the head to whip rapidly back-and-forth, thus affecting the soft tissues in the back of the neck.

Compressed Nerves

The nerves that branch out from your spinal cord can become squeezed if you have a herniated disc in your neck or a constriction of the foramen (the place where the nerves exit the spine). Nerve discomfort can extend from the neck to the hands and fingers in some circumstances, a disease known as “radiculopathy.”

Degenerative Joint Conditions

Conditions such as osteoarthritis can reduce the cartilage between the vertebrae in the neck, also resulting in neck pain. Like any other joint in your body, the neck joints can deteriorate with age, causing pain.

Muscle Strains

Even something as simple as sitting at your desk all day with your neck craned toward the computer screen can cause your neck muscles to become strained by overuse.

There are many more reasons why neck pain may occur, so slow down before you go Googling! The best way to be 100% sure of why you are experiencing neck pain is to see a physiotherapist for an appointment.

Physiotherapy Can Help Relieve Your Neck Pain

Physiotherapy is one of the most effective treatments for neck discomfort. Our physiotherapists at The Running Physio will perform a comprehensive physical examination to evaluate the range of motion in your neck and any limits you may be experiencing as a result of your pain. This will aid them in determining which treatments are most appropriate for your particular rehabilitation plan.

Specific exercises will be prescribed by our Toronto, ON physiotherapists to help you strengthen, build, and improve the muscles and tissues in your neck. Our therapist may use manual or hands-on therapy, which consists of specific techniques aimed at reducing stiffness and increasing the range of motion in your neck.

With the ultimate goal of eradicating your neck discomfort as quickly as possible, you will agree on the goals and expectations of each step of your specific treatment plan.

We will also focus on improving your posture to aid in the recovery of your neck muscles and to avoid future injury.

Our Toronto, ON physiotherapist will even collaborate with your primary care physician if necessary!

Neck Pain Relief FAQs

  • What causes neck pain?

Neck pain can be caused by several factors, including muscle strains, poor posture, injuries such as whiplash, nerve irritation, joint-related changes, and prolonged activities such as computer work. Since the neck supports and moves your head throughout the day, problems affecting the muscles, joints, or surrounding tissues can contribute to discomfort.

  • How can physiotherapy help with neck pain?

Physiotherapy can help reduce neck pain, improve mobility, relieve stiffness, strengthen supporting muscles, and address movement patterns contributing to discomfort. At The Running Physio, treatment may include targeted exercises, manual therapy, posture guidance, and movement strategies to help improve function and support your return to work, exercise, and daily activities.

  • When should I see a physiotherapist for neck pain?

You should consider seeing a physiotherapist if neck pain is affecting your daily activities, work, sleep, exercise, or movement. Symptoms such as ongoing stiffness, reduced range of motion, headaches, numbness, tingling, or weakness may benefit from an assessment to identify the cause and determine an appropriate treatment approach.

  • What are the common symptoms of neck pain?

Common symptoms of neck pain include stiffness, muscle tightness, reduced movement, headaches, discomfort when staying in one position, difficulty sleeping, and pain that extends towards the shoulders. Some people may also experience numbness, tingling, or weakness in the arms or hands if nerves are affected.

  • Can poor posture cause neck pain?

Yes, poor posture can contribute to neck pain by placing additional stress on the muscles, joints, and tissues supporting the neck. Spending long periods looking down at screens, sitting at a desk, or keeping your head in one position can increase strain over time. Physiotherapy can help improve posture awareness, movement habits, and muscle strength to support healthier neck mechanics.

  • Can physiotherapy help with neck pain from sitting at a desk?

Yes, physiotherapy can help manage neck pain related to prolonged computer use and desk work. Treatment focuses on addressing posture, muscle tension, mobility restrictions, and movement habits that may contribute to stiffness and discomfort. Your physiotherapist can provide exercises and strategies to improve comfort during work activities.

  • Can physiotherapy help with whiplash-related neck pain?

Yes, physiotherapy can help manage whiplash-related neck pain by improving mobility, reducing discomfort, and supporting recovery. Whiplash commonly occurs after sudden forward and backward movement of the head, such as during a car accident or sports collision. Treatment is personalized based on your symptoms, injury severity, and recovery goals.

  • Can a pinched nerve cause neck pain?

Yes, a compressed nerve in the neck can cause pain that travels into the shoulder, arm, hand, or fingers. Some people may also experience numbness, tingling, or weakness. A physiotherapist can assess your symptoms, movement, and functions to help identify contributing factors and recommend an appropriate treatment plan.

  • Can neck pain cause headaches?

Yes, neck pain can sometimes contribute to headaches when stiffness, muscle tension, or movement restrictions affect the structures around the neck. However, headaches can have different causes. If headaches are frequent, severe, or accompanied by concerning symptoms, it is important to seek advice from a qualified healthcare professional.

  • What happens during physiotherapy treatment for neck pain?

During your first appointment at The Running Physio, your physiotherapist will review your symptoms, medical history, activity levels, and movement limitations. They may assess your neck mobility, posture, strength, and related areas such as your shoulders and upper back. Based on the assessment, they will create a personalized treatment plan that may include exercises, manual therapy, and posture strategies.

  • What exercises can help with neck pain?

Exercises for neck pain depend on the cause of your symptoms and your individual goals. Physiotherapy programs may include exercises to improve neck strength, mobility, posture, and control of supporting muscles. Your physiotherapist can recommend suitable exercises based on your symptoms, activity level, and recovery needs.

  • Is manual therapy effective for neck pain relief?

Manual therapy can help some patients with neck pain by improving joint mobility, reducing stiffness, and supporting more comfortable movement. At The Running Physio, manual therapy may be combined with exercises and movement strategies to address symptoms and contributing factors.

  • How long does it take to recover from neck pain?

Recovery time for neck pain depends on the cause, severity of symptoms, overall health, and consistency with your treatment plan. Some people improve with targeted physiotherapy, while others with more complex conditions may require a longer rehabilitation approach.
